All'inizio della sua carriera visitò Roma, dove venne a conoscenza delle opere dei maestri italiani e da cui fu influenzato, specialmente da \u003ca href=\"https:\/\/it.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Caravaggio\" title=\"Caravaggio\"\u003eCaravaggio\u003c\/a\u003e. È proprio da quest'ultimo che trasse ispirazione per la caratteristica illuminazione usata in parte dei suoi dipinti. Ritornato nei \u003ca href=\"https:\/\/it.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Paesi_Bassi\" title=\"Paesi Bassi\"\u003ePaesi Bassi\u003c\/a\u003e, divenne uno dei pittori di spicco del suo periodo, dipingendo sia quadri che ritratti. At the beginning of his career he visited Rome, where he became acquainted with the works of Italian masters and by which he was influenced, especially by Caravaggio. It is from the latter that he drew inspiration for the characteristic lighting used in part of his paintings. Returning to the Netherlands, he became one of the leading painters of his period, painting both pictures and portraits.
