Right from the start, however, the Italian troops found themselves in difficulty against the English armored cars and light tanks, against which the machine-guns of the L3 was insufficient. Thus, taking advantage of the stock of 20 mm Solothurn anti-tank rifles shipped to Libya, the workshops of the armoured units worked to modify a part of the L3, replacing the machine-guns with this weapon that was at least effective against the modest armor of the British exploration vehicles.
