Fu ideato, partendo dallo scafo del carro leggero L6\/40 per sostituire presso i reggimenti di bersaglieri il cannone anticarro 47\/32 e venne impiegato in Russia, in Africa settentrionale e in Sicilia dalle unità italiane. Viste le perfomance insufficienti dell'L6, il semovente L40 lo sostituì nelle linee di produzione della SPA si Torino. Dopo l'8 settembre 1943, i tedeschi utilizzarono alcuni semoventi con la denominazione di Stug. Il modello si compone dei due blocchi laterali con i cingoli e il treno di rotolamento, lo scafo superiore (compreso il cannone da 47\/32) e la parte inferiore dello scafo, che è solamente agganciata a incastro: con una lieve pressione dall'alto è possibile sganciare il pezzo in maniera tale da poter dipingere l'interno dell'abitacolo. It was designed starting from the hull of the L6 \/ 40 light tank to replace the 47\/32 anti-tank gun in the Bersaglieri regiments and was used in Russia, North Africa and Sicily by the Italian units. Given the insufficient performance of the L6, the self-propelled L40 replaced it in the production lines of the SPA in Turin. After 8 September 1943, the Germans used some self-propelled guns with the name of Stug.
