Derived from the Carden-Loyd Mk VI tankette, and armed with two Fiat Mod. 14\/35 8 mm machine guns, it was used in Ethiopia and during the Spanish Civil War, where on some vehicles the armament was enhanced with the installation of a 20 mm Solothurn anti-tank rifle. During the World War it was used to a large extent in the Libyan theater, in Greece and Yugoslavia. Although it was largely outdated, after September the 8th 1943, when Italy surrendered to the Allies, L3 was still employed by the units of the Repubblica sociale (the pro-Axis government that ruled in the northern part of Italy) in anti-partisan missions. Produced starting from 1938 until the end of '39, when the assembly were closed to make way for the production of the M13, it turned out to be a vehicle not up to the situation, because of its light armor and insufficient armament. The M11, in fact, had a 37 mm anti-tank gun in the casemate and two Breda 8 mm machine guns in the turret. After some prototypes, initially equipped with a 47 mm anti-tank gun (the same as the M13), the 75 mm howitzer was finally opted for, installed in a casemate designed over the hull of the M13. The first vehicles were assigned to the units only in January 1942, when they reached the 132nd regiment of the Ariete armoured division in Libya. 60 examples of the M40 were produced, while about another 200 were produced using the hull of the M14\/41.
