Era un biplano compatto, robusto e molto manovrabile anche se non eccezionalmente rapido. Per l'epoca in cui entrò in servizio era anche potentemente armato con le sue due mitragliatrici Breda-SAFAT da 12,7, sincronizzate e sparanti attraverso il disco dell'elica. Venne costruito in 1212 esemplari ed ebbe il suo impiego più massiccio nel corso della Guerra civile spagnola, quando circa 400 CR32 furono utilizzati dall'Aviazione legionaria (il ramo aereo del CTV - corpo truppe volontarie) costituita da Mussolini per venire in soccorso dei ribelli nazionalisti guidati dal caudillo Francisco Franco. Altri 120 caccia furono impiegati direttamente dall'aeronautica nazionalista. Il comportamento in battaglia fu molto positivo, visto che a fronte della perdita di 73 apparecchi, i CR32 rivendicarono l'abbattimento di 242 biplani Polikarpov I-15 e 240 monoplani Polikarpov I-16, oltre a 60 bombardieri Tupolev SB-2. Allo scoppio della Seconda guerra mondiale la Regia Aeronautica allineava ancora 294 CR32, ormai disperatamente sorpassati per velocità e armamento rispetto ai caccia britannici. It was a compact, robust and very maneuverable biplane, although not exceptionally fast. By the time he entered service he was also powerfully armed with his two 12.7 Breda-SAFAT machine-guns, synchronized and firing through the propeller disc. It still holds the record of aircraft built in the largest number in Italy, 1800 between 1938 and 1944. It was built on a project by the engineer Celestino Rosatelli on the basis of the positive experiences obtained by his predecessor, the CR32, during the Spanish Civil War. As soon as he entered the line, he was welcomed favorably by the Italian pilots, who appreciated its robustness and maneuverability. They fought in the skies of the French, Greek and above all Libyan front, where they performed well until the entry on the scene of the much more powerful and armed English monoplane such as the Hurricanes and above all the Spitfires. In April 1941, replaced in the fighter squadrons by the Macchi 200, he had a second operational life as a fighter-bomber, revealing himself unexpectedly valid, thanks to the sturdiness of the structure and the resistance of the radial engine to hits from the ground. Inizialmente progettato come aereo monoposto, nella versione BA65bis venne trasformato in biposto con l'aggiunta di una torretta dorsale per una mitragliatrice difensiva da 12,7 mm. Questo comportò un aumento di peso di circa 500 kg e una diminuzione della velocità massima di 20 km\/h. Impiegato in Spagna come aereo multiruolo, il Nibbio fallì come intercettore e ricognitore, mentre ottenne giudizi positivi come velivolo d'attacco al suolo, anche in virtù del suo potente armamento (per l'epoca) che consisteva in 4 mitragliatrici frontali, 2 da 7,7 mm e 2 da 12,7, ed 1 mitragliatrice da 12,7 brandeggiabile nella torretta dorsale, oltre alle bombe nel vano interno e nelle rastrelliere sub-alari per un totale di 500 kg (1000 teorici). L'entrata in guerra dell'Italia nel giugno 1940 videro il Nibbio ormai superato e sostituito nei reparti dal più moderno Breda BA88. Le terribili performance di quest'ultimo apparecchio, però, obbligarono i vertici aeronautici a bloccare la radiazione dei BA65 e a spedirne tutti gli esemplari in Libia per operare come aereo d'assalto contro le colonne blindate inglesi. In questo compito, i Nibbio si dimostrarono ancora validi e ottennero buoni risultati. It was mainly used during the Spanish Civil War, under the insignia of Aviazione Legionaria (the Nationalist Airforce), and on the Libyan front until the beginning of 1941. Initially designed as a single-seat aircraft, in the BA65bis version it was transformed into a two-seater with the addition of a dorsal turret for a 12.7 mm defensive machine gun. This resulted in a weight increase of around 500 kg and a decrease in the maximum speed of 20 km\/h. Used in Spain as a multi-role aircraft, the \"Nibbio\" failed as an interceptor and reconnaissance aircraft, while it obtained positive judgments as a ground attack aircraft, because of its powerful armament (for the time) which consisted of 4 frontal machine guns, two 7.7 mm and two 12.7, and one machine gun calibre 12.7 pivoting in the dorsal turret, in addition to the bombs in the internal compartment and in the sub-wing racks for a total of 500 kg (1000 theoretical).
