Bas-relief representing a fictional figure.

The term "piracy" derives from "pirate", which in turn comes from the Latin pirate, piratæ, which has its equivalent in the Greek πειρατής (peiratès), from πειράω (peiráo) which means "to try" and "to attack".

The great age of piracy in the Caribbean began around 1560 and ended around 1720, as Western European nations that owned colonies in the Americas began to exert more control along the New Continent's maritime trade routes. The period during which pirates were most successful lasted from 1640 until 1680. Piracy thrived in the Caribbean thanks largely to English ports such as Nelson's Dockyard, Port Royal, Antigua, and the ports of Barbados.
