Autocannone da 65/17 su CS8 Morris - 1/72 scale resin model kit, 3D printed

Durante la campagna del Nord Africa, la necessità di dotare le truppe italiane di mezzi mobili e armati portò alla nascita di soluzioni improvvisate ma ingegnose, come l’autocannone da 65/17 su Morris CS8. Questo veicolo rappresenta uno degli esempi più interessanti di riutilizzo di materiali di preda bellica. Lo chassis Morris CS8, originariamente britannico e spesso abbandonato o catturato durante i combattimenti, fu adattato dagli italiani per ospitare il cannone da 65/17 Mod. 1908/13, un’arma da montagna leggera ma ancora efficace per il supporto diretto alle truppe.

Questa trasformazione consentì di creare un mezzo semovente veloce, adatto al combattimento nel deserto, dove la mobilità e la rapidità di intervento erano cruciali. Pur essendo un mezzo privo di protezione corazzata, l’autocannone 65/17 era apprezzato per la sua capacità di colpire rapidamente e ritirarsi altrettanto in fretta, sfruttando le vaste distese sabbiose per spostamenti tattici.

Utilizzato prevalentemente tra il 1941 e il 1943, il veicolo trovò impiego in varie unità motorizzate e reparti misti del Regio Esercito e in parte anche da reparti della Xª Flottiglia MAS e formazioni italiane collaborazioniste dopo l’armistizio. Fu spesso destinato a ruoli di supporto mobile, difesa di colonne logistiche e ingaggio rapido contro mezzi leggeri o postazioni nemiche isolate.

Sebbene non standardizzato né prodotto in grandi quantità, il 65/17 su Morris CS8 rappresenta un simbolo dell'adattabilità italiana nelle condizioni difficili del fronte africano, dove l’inventiva sopperiva spesso alla carenza di mezzi moderni.

During the North African campaign, the need to equip Italian troops with mobile and armed vehicles led to the creation of improvised yet ingenious solutions, such as the 65/17 gun truck mounted on the Morris CS8 chassis. This vehicle stands as one of the most interesting examples of repurposing captured war matériel. The Morris CS8 chassis, originally British and often abandoned or captured during combat, was adapted by the Italians to mount the 65/17 Mod. 1908/13 mountain gun, a light yet still effective weapon for direct troop support.

This transformation resulted in a fast self-propelled vehicle, ideal for desert warfare, where mobility and quick reaction were essential. Though unarmored, the 65/17 gun truck was valued for its ability to strike swiftly and retreat just as fast, taking advantage of the vast desert spaces for tactical movement.

Primarily used between 1941 and 1943, the vehicle saw service in various motorized and mixed units of the Regio Esercito, and partially also in units of the Xª MAS Flotilla and Italian collaborationist forces after the armistice. It was often used for mobile support roles, logistics convoy defense, and rapid engagement against light vehicles or isolated enemy positions.

Although never standardized or mass-produced, the 65/17 on Morris CS8 remains a symbol of Italian adaptability in the challenging conditions of the African front, where ingenuity often compensated for a lack of modern equipment.
